Formed in 1968 by a group of Christian couples who had married across the
denominations, this has grown into a large international organization providing
up to date information and support for families, where one partner is a
committed Roman Catholic and the other is a practising member of a different
Christian tradition. It is also a point of reference for clergy or others
involved with an interchurch family.
Why, in this ecumenical age, is such a body needed? Because two thirds
of Catholic marriages in Great Britain now involve a non-Catholic and
often very difficult questions have to be answered. Will the families be
upset? Where will the wedding take place? Where will the children be
baptised and both churches be involved? The family may also have to cope
with the distressing prospect of not being able to receive communion
together. After thirty years experience we know that these and other
problems can so often be turned into opportunities.
We also take pride in our commitment to Christian unity and many members are active
at all levels of the ecumenical movement.
Bishop Crispian Holis is on the association's panel of reference and its
Presidents include the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, the Archbishop of of
Canterbury and the Moderator of the Free Churches Council.
